These earrings are a copy of gold earrings that are kept at the Monaster of Kykkos in Cyprus. The subject of the Peacock Earring is inspired by the Early Christian Byzantine Era (4th- 7th Century CE). The main characteristics of Byzantine Art are interiority, symbolism, and transcendence. Symbols such as the peacock are very common in this era and used by the artist to depict the natural world. Similar pair are in Dumbarton Oaks’ Byzantine Collection.
