Turtles are earth and water symbols and appear frequently in Pre-Columbian art from Central America, including the Coclé culture in Panama. Their goldsmiths were fascinated by the lost-wax casting process. Due to their long lives, turtles were often used in creation stories regarding the origin of the Earth and symbolize good health and longevity. Turtles and other amulets were often worn as protection against hostile forces or made as offerings to appease their gods.
