Poly Chiffon Dumbarton Oaks Mosaic Scarf

Daphne (Modern Harbiye, Turkey), Roman, late 3rd-4th Century

Adapted from a panel of a long ‘carpet’ floor mosaic in the House of the Red Pavement, the three-dimensional optical illusion effectively plays with the viewer’s perception of space. Using four different colors, the designer forms complex shapes by combining simple ones.
